Dawn Marcus graduated from the State University of New York at Syracuse medical school in 1986. She completed a neurology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. Since 1990, she has been a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh medical center, and is currently an associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, focusing on researching chronic pain management.
Dr. Marcus has authored over 100 articles on the topics of chronic pain and headache, and has given numerous training sessions and invited lectures on the topics of chronic pain and headache in the United States and internationally. She has also been the principal investigator on research projects investigating pain epidemiology, pathology, treatment, and women’s issues that have been funded by regional or national sources. She has also authored 4 books on chronic pain and migraine, including 3 books for practicing primary care clinicians (Migraine in Women, Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management, and Headache and Chronic Pain Syndromes: The Case-based Guide to Targeted Assessment and Treatment) and one for patients (10 Simple Solutions to Migraine). Dr. Marcus won the 2007 Excellence in Media Award from the National Headache Foundation for her book, 10 Simple Solutions to Migraine. She will have the second edition of her chronic pain book published in 2008, along with three other new medical books.
Dr. Marcus is also an avid animal lover and the proud handler of a 2-year old soft-coated wheaten terrier who is trained as a certified therapy dog. Wheatie accompanies Dr. Marcus on her visits to the hospital and performs his own therapeutic touch for both patients and staff. Wheatie has also taught Dr. Marcus about “the dog way” of approaching life, inspiring her to write Fit As Fido: Follow Your Dog to Better Health
(to be released in fall of 2008).
